Congratulations to Philip who has successfully built an Intel i5 based PC and installed it in the classroom.

ASRock H61M

The ASRock motherboard has SATA 3 and 2 x USB 3.0 external connections. Although it only has 2 DIMM slots, we've installed 4Gb 1333Mhz RAM in each slot, giving 8Gb of very fast RAM. The i5 quad core processor uses socket LGA1155 and runs at 3.30Ghz. The 1Tb SATA 3.0 hard drive has a transfer rate of 6Gbits/sec. We're using the onboard VGA controller. As this motherboard also has onboard DVI and HDMI graphics, an interesting project for the future would be to hook up a monitor to the DVI and HDMI connections. We haven't used the PCIe expansion slots so there's scope for future upgrades there. As it's PCI Express 2.0, the larger x16 slots operate at 8 Gbit/sec and the smaller x1 slot operates at 0.5 Gbit/sec. We now have 4 Intel based systems in the classroom.

14/02/11 Right, bitsoflearning is ticking over again. I'm back after a fairly serious illness. I must be getting old! Things will gradually get back to normal. Lectures will happen as normal this week and I'll do a few monthly reviews. However, please don't hand up any projects until next week as I don't have enough energy for correcting yet. Good to be back though. There's only so much daytime TV you can watch before you begin to feel like a vegetable!

21/12/10 Well folks, it's snowing heavily and more snow is forecast overnight. The temperature is not going to rise above zero, so travelling to college tomorrow will be difficult, especially if you're travelling from outside Dublin. I'll leave it up to you guys, whether you want to come in or not. We may not be able to do our Mario's XMAS lunch tomorrow. It depends on how many people are here. If it doesn't go ahead, we can always do it in January instead. Anyway, wrap up and stay warm!

03/12/10 The lifts are working again. However, there is a small problem with the lift when users enter it on the ground floor – there is a 25 sec delay between pressing the button to the 1st floor and the lift actually moving to the that floor.  Don't worry, you're not stuck! Just count to 25!
03/12/10 Toilets are working again. Yipee!
02/12/10 Latest Update
